Cloud Kitchen Licenses & Legal Requirements in India

The mandatory five

1. FSSAI license — Basic, State or Central depending on turnover.
2. GST registration — mandatory once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹40 lakh in some states); required from day one to list on aggregators.
3. Shops & Establishment registration — from your local municipal corporation.
4. Trade license — issued by the municipal corporation.
5. Fire safety NOC — required if kitchen area exceeds 250 sq m or uses commercial gas.

Situational licenses

• Health / Sanitary NOC — some states (e.g. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) mandate this for food businesses.
• Trademark registration — protect your brand name before scaling.
• Liquor license — only if serving alcohol (rare for cloud kitchens).
• Signage / Signboard license — if you have an outdoor board.
• PF & ESI registration — once staff count crosses 10 and 20 respectively.

• NOC from landlord
• Electricity / water bill of the premises
• Layout plan of the kitchen (for FSSAI State and above)

Compliance calendar

• Renew FSSAI 30 days before expiry — late fees are steep.
• File GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly.
• Display FSSAI number on every package.
• Maintain sanitation and pest-control logs monthly.
