Why renewal matters more for delivery kitchens
Swiggy, Zomato and ONDC verify your FSSAI certificate is live, not just issued. An expired licence gets your listings delisted within days — which for a delivery-only kitchen means revenue stops entirely. Renewal is cheap insurance against that.
Which licence do you hold?
- Basic registration — turnover under Rs 12 lakh/year. Most single home and small cloud kitchens.
- State licence — turnover Rs 12 lakh to Rs 20 crore, or premises in a state-licensed category. Typical for a dedicated commercial kitchen.
- Central licence — turnover above Rs 20 crore, multiple states, or operations in specified areas like railways and airports.

The renewal window (memorise this)
You can apply for renewal 180 days before expiry, and you must apply at least 1 day before. The fee structure:
- Basic registration: Rs 100/year (plus Rs 100/day penalty if late)
- State licence: Rs 2,000–5,000/year depending on turnover
- Central licence: Rs 7,500/year
Renewing within the window keeps the same 14-digit licence number — important because it's printed on packaging, bills and your app listings.
Step-by-step renewal on FoSCoS
- Go to foscos.fssai.gov.in and log in with your registered username and password.
- Open Issued Licenses / Renew Licence or Registration.
- Select the licence, verify your details, and update anything that changed — kind of business, turnover, contact number.
- Upload a self-declared Form B and, for State/Central licences, any documents the checklist asks for (ID proof, premises proof, water test report where applicable).
- Pay the fee online and download the acknowledgement. It's valid proof of an active application.
- For State and Central licences, an inspection may follow; respond promptly to any query raised on the portal.
If your licence has already expired
An expired FSSAI licence cannot be renewed — you must apply for a fresh licence, which may get a new number. Update the new number with Swiggy/Zomato and on your packaging as soon as it's issued. If the lapse is recent, apply the same week; continued operation without a valid licence risks penalties up to Rs 5 lakh under the FSS Act.
Renewal hygiene for busy owners
- Set two calendar reminders — 6 months and 2 months before expiry.
- Keep a folder with your licence PDF, login credentials and payment receipts; aggregators ask for the certificate at every document re-verification.
- Renew for 3–5 years at once if cash flow allows — fewer renewals, fewer chances to forget.
- If you're upgrading (e.g. registration to State licence after crossing Rs 12 lakh), that's a new application, not a renewal — do it before the turnover actually crosses the line.
Renewal vs. modification vs. duplicate
Modification changes details on a live licence (address, products, turnover). Duplicate reprints a lost certificate. Renewal extends validity. Each has its own tab on FoSCoS — using the wrong one is the most common reason applications get stuck.
