Getting started

How to Start a Home Bakery Business in India

Baking is the lowest-capital food business in India and one of the highest margin. Here is how to move from baking for family to a registered, profitable home bakery.

Step 1: Register properly from day one

Get an FSSAI Basic Registration on the FoSCoS portal — Rs 100 a year, done online, usually approved within 7-15 days. Without it you cannot sell legally, list on delivery apps, or accept corporate orders. Our FSSAI application guide walks through the form.

Step 2: Equipment that actually earns

  • Convection oven or large OTG (40-60 L) — Rs 12,000-35,000. This is the one thing not to cheap out on.
  • Planetary / stand mixer — Rs 8,000-25,000. Saves hours once you cross 5 cakes a week.
  • Digital scale (0.1 g) — Rs 800. Baking is chemistry.
  • Turntable, spatulas, piping set, moulds — Rs 3,000-6,000.
  • Display refrigerator — Rs 20,000+ once you sell fresh cream cakes regularly.

Step 3: Choose a narrow product line

The bakeries that grow fastest sell three to five things exceptionally well: for example celebration cakes + brownies + cookies, or artisan breads + cinnamon rolls. A 30-item menu from a home kitchen means stale stock and inconsistent quality.

Step 4: Price for profit, not for friends

Price = (ingredients + electricity + packaging) × 1.25 wastage × 2.5-3

Charge separately for custom designs, fondant work, and same-day rush orders. The most common mistake in home baking is quoting the neighbour price to a paying customer.

Step 5: Packaging and shelf life

  • Rigid cake boxes with a base board — a collapsed cake is a lost customer.
  • Label every box: name, ingredients, allergens, date of manufacture, best before, FSSAI number. This is a legal requirement.
  • Cookies and brownies in sealed pouches with a silica sachet extend shelf life to 7-15 days.

Step 6: Getting orders

  1. Instagram with consistent photos — see phone food photography.
  2. WhatsApp catalogue with fixed sizes and prices.
  3. Society and apartment WhatsApp groups — the fastest first 20 orders.
  4. Corporate gifting for Diwali and New Year — one order can equal a month of retail.
  5. List free on Cloud Kitchen Adda so local searches find you, and take bulk and party orders.

When to graduate to a commercial kitchen

Once you consistently cross 25-30 orders a week, home electricity, oven capacity and storage become the bottleneck. That is the point to move into a small rented kitchen — read how to start a cloud kitchen in India.
